    GERALDTON REGIONAL ART GALLERY

Home to the City of Geraldton-Greenough Collection which boasts work by Elizabeth Durack, Norman Lindsay and an array of contemporary local artists, the Geraldton Regional Art Gallery is also renowned for its innovation in the Arts.

Located in the heart of Geraldton, the Geraldton Regional Art Gallery opened on 6th August 1984 and is housed in the former Town Hall which operated from 1907 to 1964.

Renovations completed in 1984 saw the Geraldton Regional Art Gallery become the first regional ‘A’ class venue in Western Australia and in 1997 the building was listed on the State Register of Heritage Places in Western Australia.

The Geraldton Regional Art Gallery is jointly funded and operated by the City of Geraldton-Greenough and the Art Gallery of Western Australia. The Gallery houses and cares for the City of Geraldton-Greenough Art Collection which is comprised of over 404 artworks, principally paintings and works on paper.

The City Collection was initiated in 1959 with a bequest of 39 artworks to the then Town of Geraldton by Western Australian philanthropist, the late Sir Claude Hotchin and a further 4 works in 1962. The collection today boasts works by local and West Australian contemporary artists as well as historically significant works by Norman Lindsay, Rolf Harris, Robert Juniper, Howard Taylor, Hans Heysen, Elizabeth Durack and more.

The Gallery’s “A” classification allows for an annual schedule of some 25 exhibitions of the highest calibre accessed from local, state, national and international sources.

The Project Gallery provides mentoring and support for new artists; the Education Program outreaches to all schools in the Midwest and the main Gallery hosts national calibre touring art exhibitions.

Serving the people of Geraldton-Greenough and the Midwest as well as many visitors each year from throughout Australia and overseas, the Gallery is one of only three “A” class venues in regional WA.
